Storm Damage is NOT usually what people think. Most people believe their roof must be at the point of complete failure before it can be considered to be damaged. The truth is that hail stones of 3/4" or greater can cause damage that will shorten the lifespan of your roof.


How Hail Damages Roofs:


Asphalt Shingles are made of a layer of fiberglass that is embedded in asphalt and then covered with ceramic granules. The fiberglass gives the shingle strength and flexibility while the asphalt is used for waterproofing. The ceramic granules have two jobs. One is to add color effects to make your roof look nice and the other is for UV protection. 

When the hailstones rain down from the sky, they smash some of those granules into the asphalt and dislodge or loosen the others around the impact. At first it may look like nothing, but over time, the loose granules fall off exposing the asphalt to the sun and other weather. This begins to break down the asphalt causing it to fail many years before its life expectancy is up. Unfortunately fresh hail damage is not easy to see in many cases. Most of the time it doesn't cause problems for many years after the storm. By then it is too late to file an insurance claim because most policies require the claim to be filed within 1 year of the storm. For this reason it is extremely important to have a qualified roofing contractor inspect the shingles before it is too late.
